This photo was taken in Camas on August 23, 2007. According to CW Watch sources, there were at least 8 Camas fire fighter/paramedics playing soccer in the field adjacent to the photo of three Camas fire apparatus that you see in the picture. Photo was taken at Dorothy Fox school near the field. The time of day was approx. 2:30 p.m.
“It is common policy for Camas fire employees to work out at Lacamas Swim and Sport and play basketball and soccer while on their 24 hour shift duty.
I am a member of Lacamas Swim and Sport and have witnessed many times when the fire guys are working out at the club, while in uniform, leaving our main station 41 completely unmanned…. I know this because I witnessed a heart attack victim in a downtown store one time and it took 12 minutes for them to arrive because no one was at our downtown station. They were all at Lacamas, working out at the same time!
I understand our fire fighters need to stay physically fit… its part of their job, but shouldn’t they do it on their own time? Do police officers work out on duty? No!
I see one of our Washington State Patrol Officers at Lacamas Swim and sport everyday…working out, and it’s on his own time, not on State time. He’s off duty.
What’s going on with the Camas Fire Department?”

Julie and Jeff, You are both so right about sticking around the Station and using the state of the art machinery /equipment in the basement of City Hall. Why, after all, did the city purchase such machinery and equipment?

Sorry you guys but taxpaying Tim is right. I work in the fire/ems field and it is very common to workout and have activities on duty. Once again, heart attacks are the number one killer of firefighters. What good does it do for them to be sitting in the building over being in their zone? Rarely, if ever, do the patients or calls come walking up to the station. So that really doesn’t matter. I think some people need some hobbies other than following firefighters around and noting their activities. What do you expect these people to do on a 24 hour shift? Sit in a chair staring at the radio waiting on a call? Next time you need help for yourself or a loved one….remember who will be the first ones their to help.

Did any of you see the great job our fire department did yesterday ? I did it was shameful . I would be embarrased to be one of them. You guys in east county arent alone. I live in the city and I dont feel any safer then you . At least you know going in no one is coming , we on the other hand feel like we are playing a game maybe they will and maybe they wont show . WHY ARE WE PAYING TOP DOLLAR FOR INADEQUATE SERVICE ?

Don’t worry “fED UP”, you are paying less than any other property owners in SW WA, for your fire protection.

I agree with “Camas res” what if someone near lacamas swim and sport needs help? should they drive around randomly all day hoping to be close to whomever might need help when a situation arises? Maybe you should be grateful there are people willing to work 24 hr shifts and stop complaining.

Julie,
Wow. How do you have enough time in your day to complain about such of a small issue. Do you want a unhealthy-overweight-heart attack risk individual to come and rescue you out of a burning building or cut you out of a car? I sure dont. I am happy they work out everyday. You say its up to the individual to keep up on their workout? Ha, tell me you work out on a everyday basis, and if you do, would you after a 24hr shift running calls all night? Their job requires physical fitness, does yours? And since it does, it should be on the clock. They need family life, rest time, and be able to have their time in order to be prepared for you … I…when we call 911.
